Instant and Economical Loss on Ignition Testing for Trommel Fines

Instant and Economical Loss on Ignition Testing for Trommel Fines

On April 1st 2015, HMRC’s new landfill tax regime for Trommel Fines came into force. Many issues have been raised with the proposed Loss on Ignition (LOI) testing schedule among concerns that tests will take too long to be viable and too costly to perform with any regularity. This may indeed be true for samples sent to a laboratory but there is an alternative that can provide rapid, accurate Trommel sample analysis, at site, the Computrac MAX-5000XL LOI Analyser.

The Computrac MAX-5000XL, which is available exclusively through ABLE Instruments in the UK, can accept a sample of landfill material and automatically calculate an accurate LOI result in as little as 30 minutes. Required operator expertise is minimal and testing inexpensive at approximately 0.50p per sample. This makes it economically possible for operators to test every load.

The Computrac correlates precisely with the proposed reference methodology (muffle furnace ashing) enabling both waste producers and landfill operators to know in minutes if waste fines are in compliance with the law or if they require further processing. The key to this precise and repeatable correlation is extensive test parameter development. ABLE has worked closely with the manufacturer, Arizona Instrument, to ensure that sample preparation, presentation, temperature profile, moisture/LOI test linking and the test ending criteria produce results that mirror laboratory muffle furnace testing.

The MAX-5000Xl is constructed of solid steel and designed to give reliable, accurate results in the harshest environments.
