CETCO Process Equipment’s produced water analysis & treatment systems are capable of addressing all aspects of separating or treating gas, oil and water from a production stream.

In order to assist their client base with maintaining oil in water (OIW) discharge compliance and achieving real time online analysis of solids (size and concentration), CETCO contracted ABLE Instruments & Controls Ltd to supply two of their Canty Transportable INFLOW vision-based systems.

Combining the latest in CCD Ethernet, microscopic camera technology with high intensity LED lighting and CANTYVISION Intelligent Software, the INFLOW captures and analyses images of the process fluid whereby the suspended particulates (oil, water, gas bubbles) are measured against a number of different parameters to provide size, shape and concentration data. Remote HMIs are provided by ABLE supplied ATEX rated Aegex tablets.

The Canty systems will be used to replace a competitor’s vision system which uses a purged enclosure to achieve ATEX compliance and tend to leak on loss of pressure.

In Summer 2019, a final decision was taken to upgrade the facility’s nuclear reactor chilled water metering systems to the current generation of USMs. As the supplier of the previous, highly effective clamp-on ultrasonic meters, ABLE were asked to recommend and supply the new systems. As a result, ABLE has recently received a Ministry of Defence Contract to equip the test facility with 20 off single channel meters and a dual channel submersible portable unit.

Customer: Arabian Gulf Oil Company
Project: Well Fluid Flow Velocity Control
Location: Messla, Libya
Products: Thermal Dispersion Flow Switches

The Arabian Gulf Oil Company (AGOCO) is based in Benghazi, Libya, engaged in crude oil and natural gas exploration, production and refining. It’s a subsidiary of state-owned National Oil Corporation (NOC). AGOCO around 6000 employees, more than 99% of them are nationals, distributed over its different locations.

AGOCO’S roots go back to 1971 when the Arabian Gulf Exploration Company (AGECO) was established, following the implementation of Law No. 115, nationalizing shares held by British Petroleum (BP). AGOCO was reformed by NOC in late 1979 to take over the assets of a partnership of BP and Nelson Bunker Hunt of the United States, and a partnership of Chevron and Texaco called Amoseas.

AGOCO has upstream operations in eight oil fields including the Messla Oil Fields and also operates one crude oil terminal in Tobruk.

In order to be able to determine the minimum permissible flow velocity of well fluid (oil, water and natural gas mix) in 6” pipes with reliability, accuracy and repeatability, AGOCO chose ABLE’s Magnetrol Thermal Dispersion Switches. The operator required full confidence that the Model TD2 would switch at a minimum flow velocity of 0.055 m/s.

Customer: Severn Trent Water
Project: Trunk Main Water Flow
Location: Various
Products: Full Profile Insertion Mag Flow Meters

Severn Trent Water is one of the largest of the 10 regulated water and sewerage companies in England and Wales. They provide high quality services to more than 4.3 million homes and businesses in the Midlands.

The main companies in the group are Severn Trent Water and Severn Trent Services. Severn Trent Laboratories was rebranded as part of Severn Trent Services in 2010 to streamline the company and give it a single worldwide image rather than a series of separate organisations with different identities. As with all water companies in the United Kingdom, Severn Trent is regulated under the Water Industry Act 1991.

As part of a small (“spend to save”) metering project with scope for a lot more meters during AMP7, Severn were looking to looking to replace 4 off troublesome ABB Aqua Probes on 12” to 36” trunk mains across three sites – Campion Hills (Warwickshire), Burcot (Oxfordshire) and Hallgates (Leicestershire).

Following successful demonstrations and an evaluation period, Severn opted for ABLE’s Full Profile Insertion (FPI) Mag Flow Meter, as manufactured by our partner McCrometer. Aside from meeting exacting industry standards of 0.5% accuracy, its ease of installation and total cost savings were key elements in Severn selecting the FPI. Its insertion design facilitates easy, hot tap installation, which allows the meter to be installed without interrupting service, de-watering lines, cutting pipe, welding flanges, or inconveniencing customers.

At the time of writing, a further 12 sites are under consideration for the FPI upgrade.

Customer: Glencore / Petrochad Mangara
Project: P-3048 Level Instruments
Location: Chad, North Central Africa
Products: Aurora GWR / Magnetic Level Gauge Combined

The mining and trading giant Glencore acquired oil reserves in Chad in July 2014. In 2018, Glencore’s net production from the West African Country, including the Mangara and Badila oilfields, was approximately 2.8 million barrels of oil. By comparison, oil major BP produces close to 4 million barrels of oil equivalent per day.

The DOB block (Mangara) is 1,320 km2 and the Mangara field, the only area drilled by previous operators in the block, is located 107km from the Export Pipeline. All three wells drilled on the Mangara field by previous operators encountered oil with test rates ranging from 300 bbls/d to 1,600 bbls/d of light sweet crude oil.

As part of the level measurement upgrades on the Mangara Central Production Facility, Glencore contracted ABLE to recommend and supply the appropriate instrumentation to achieve greater accuracy on the Degassers and Recovered Oil Tanks. ABLE provided several Guided Wave Radar (GWR) Transmitters in chambers and, for those duties that required both a discreet visual indication and an analogue (4-20mA) output, ABLE specified Magnetrol Aurora GWR/Magnetic Level Gauge combinations.

Customer: Serica Energy
Project: Bruce Platform Level Indicator Upgrade
Location: UK Sector, Northern North Sea
Products: Float Level Switches & Chambers

Serica is a British-based independent upstream oil and gas company with operations centred on the UK North Sea. The Company is currently building a portfolio of assets whereby it can utilise its technical, commercial and operating capabilities to add value to existing producing resources.

This model has been proven through their producing asset, Erskine, in which they are in partnership with Chevron & Chrysaor, and on the 30th November 2018, Serica completed the acquisition of major interests in the Bruce, Keith and Rhum fields, where they took over as operator. These fields are a mixture of late-life and mid-life, largely gas producing assets where further investment can enhance recovery and extend field life.

As level instrumentation suppliers to the original Bruce area development, ABLE were approached by Serica to supply new Float Level Switches in carbon steel chambers for high and low-level alarm duties on the platform’s Closed Drain Drum vessels.

The company is the third largest producer of Scotch whisky (10.4% market share) after Diageo (34.4%), and Pernod Ricard.[3][4] The company is registered at The Glenfiddich distillery in Dufftown.[5]

Although staying true to many of the distilling techniques of its founder, Grants foster a forward thinking and pioneering culture that recognises the need for innovative thinking and continuous improvement. To that end they decided to improve the quality and accuracy of the flow measurement of the steam used to heat the whisky stills. ABLE Instruments recommended that they upgrade the existing orifice plate meters to McCrometer’s ExactSteam V-Cones. The V-Cone flowmeter acts as its own flow conditioner by disrupting all centralised flow disturbances and enables the lowest permanent pressure loss to maximise plant efficiency.

Having changed to V-Cones, William Grant are looking forward to reduced energy costs and maintenance requirements going forward.
