Customer: American Sugar Refining / Tate & Lyle
Project: Sugar Crystallisation Vessel Sight Glass Upgrade
Location: Thames Refinery, Silvertown
Products: Canty Fuseview Sight Glasses

Tate & Lyle PLC is a British-headquartered, global supplier of food and beverage ingredients to industrial markets. It was originally a sugar refining business, but from the 1970s it began to diversify, eventually divesting its sugar business in 2012. It specializes in turning raw materials such as corn and tapioca into ingredients that add taste, texture, and nutrients to food and beverages.

In July 2010 the company announced the sale of its sugar refining business, including rights to use the Tate & Lyle brand name and Lyle’s Golden Syrup, to American Sugar Refining (ASR) for £211 million. The sale included the Plaistow Wharf and Silvertown plants.

The sugar crystallisation process is typically monitored by operators viewing through a series of sight glasses on the side of the vessel. The process takes place under vacuum, so it important to have no leak paths in order to maintain a full vacuum, boil at a lower temperature, and therefore save on energy.

Historically, Tate & Lyle had installed standard tempered sight glasses, which were typically under tightened due to the risk of cracking either during installation, or during process operation, as the unit experiences local expansion and contraction during temperature cycling. This resulted in leak path creation and, ultimately, common failure of the tempered glass.

When ABLE and Canty were able demonstrate the theoretical cost savings of upgrading to the Fuseview, ASR embarked on a program to replace all existing 70 tempered glass units. The Fuseview features a metallic outer ring fused to glass so the user is tightening on metal and cannot therefore over torque and damage the window. As a result, a full seal is maintained and a full vacuum achieved, resulting in significant energy savings.

Customer: Arq UK Management Limited
Project: Arq Fuel Production
Location: Corbin, Kentucky, USA
Products: Canty Lab InFlow Particle Analyser with Automated Dilution System

At their processing plant in Corbin, Kentucky, which is the first of its kind anywhere in the world, Arq separates pure hydrocarbons from mineral matter, transforming coal and coal waste into Arq Fuel™, a micro-fine powder used for blending into oil products. Arq Fuel™ behaves like oil without the costs of the oil industry. Over 41 million tonnes of coal waste are currently under management at Corbin. The plant will produce over 1 million tonnes of Arq Fuel over the next 12 years.

Arq will tell you that they are neither a mining nor oil company, taking nothing new out of the earth. They state that they are technology-led innovators applying new processes to extract pure energy from the waste produced as a result of coal mining.

As global demand for energy continues to increase, making the best use of our finite resources is one of the greatest challenges we face today.

Once the microfine coal has been pumped into water-based separation columns, where the hydrocarbons rise to the top and the mineral impurities fall to the bottom, accurate particle analysis of the purified hydrocarbon fuel is required.

Following extensive and successful laboratory trials involving Canty’s Laboratory Inflow Particle Analyser, Arq purchased a complete system with an automated dilution function, a hot fluids handling capability and trace heating.

Customer: Quorn Foods
Project: Food Preservation – Nitrogen displacement of Oxygen
Location: Belasis, Billigham, UK
Products: Magnetrol Thermal Dispersion Mass Flow Meters

Quorn Foods is the world’s leader in meat alternatives with a vision to create better protein for people and the planet, addressing global health and sustainability issues.

On 15 November 2018, the world’s biggest meat alternative production facility officially opened at Quorn Foods’ Belasis site in Billingham, in the North East. The factory expansion of 9,500m2 doubled production capacity of Quorn’s core products, adding approximately 20,000 tonnes per annum. It is part of a £150m investment by Quorn Foods, reflecting an increase in flexitarian and vegan diets, and the fact that the UK is the most advanced meat-free market in the world.

The state-of-the-art production facility will produce 1.33M packs of Quorn® products per week, equivalent to the meat produced by 1,600 cows. The efficiency improvements the expansion will deliver will help Quorn Foods continue to reduce its carbon emissions per tonne of food produced, already down by 35% since 2012.

The packaging process at Belasis uses large quantities of on-site generated nitrogen gas to displace oxygen and thereby preserve the food. Oxygen is the main agent in the air that causes spoilage by allowing the growth of potentially harmful bacteria. Not only would the bacteria spoil the food, but they could also cause disease and/or death in consumers. By contrast, nitrogen is a nonreactive gas that is non-toxic & non-odorous.

The large volumes of expensive, high purity nitrogen are produced for the blanketing process must therefore be accurately metered. When Quorn Foods needed to address this measurement, they contracted ABLE to supply them with Magnetrol’s industry proven Thermatel TA2 Thermal Mass Flow Meter. With its excellent low flow sensitivity, high turndown and direct mass flow measurement, the TA-2 is ideally suited to this critical application.

Customer: Severn Trent Water
Project: Meriden Site Trunk Main Flow Metering
Location: Meriden, West Midlands
Products: McCrometer FPI Mag - Electromagnetic Flowmeter

Severn Trent Water (STW) was founded in 1974 as a regional, state-owned water authority based in the Midlands and responsible for water supply management, and waste-water treatment and disposal. Located in the catchment areas of two of Britain’s largest rivers – the Severn and the Trent, it’s from these rivers that they get their name.

In 1989, privatisation of the water industry saw the formation of Severn Trent Plc, the parent company for STW. As a private company, STW invested heavily in replacing and repairing its assets and infrastructure. As well as complying with government legislation it set its own internal standards on issues such as public health, leakage reduction and the cleanliness of rivers and other water sources in its catchment region.

The old ABB insertion, single-point flow meters on the inlet and outlet mains from the Meriden and Whitacre Reservoirs had not been functional for a considerable time and STW elected to upgrade these obsolete meters to McCrometer’s revolutionary new Full Profile Insertion (FPI) Electromagnetic Flowmeter.

Aside from meeting exacting industry standards of 0.5% accuracy, its ease of installation and total cost savings were key elements in Severn selecting the FPI. Its insertion design facilitates easy, hot tap installation, which allows the meter to be installed without interrupting service, de-watering lines, cutting pipe, welding flanges, or inconveniencing customers.

At the time of writing, several other STW sites are under consideration for the FPI upgrade.
