Customer: Karachaganak Petroleum Operating (KPO)
Project: Oil Treatment System Upgrade
Location: Republic of Kazakhstan
Products: RF Admittance Level Transmitters

The Karachaganak field, discovered in 1979, is one of the world’s largest gas and condensate fields. Located in north-west Kazakhstan and covering an area of over 280 square kilometres, it holds estimated hydrocarbons initially in place (HIIP) of 9 billion barrels of condensate and 48 trillion cubic feet (tcf) of gas, with estimated gross reserves of over 2.4 billion barrels of condensate and 16 tcf of gas.

The Karachaganak Venture brings expertise and knowledge from five oil & gas companies – ENI (29.25 per cent), Royal Dutch Shell plc (29.25 per cent), Chevron (18 per cent), Lukoil (13.5 per cent) and KazMunaiGas (10 per cent). Together they share their experience and expertise with the Republic in looking at both domestic and export options for maximising the value of these resources.

As part of the Oil System Upgrade at KPC, KPO were looking to implement accurate and repeatable interface level measurement on both the oil and water sides of the Three Phase Separators, in some cases replacing the failed radar level gauges. ABLE were approached for a solution in this regard and supplied their renowned Drexelbrook Universal IV Transmitters. The specification called for incolnel 625 to meet the NACE MR0175 requirement for wetted parts. Measurement ranges of up to 4m and design pressures up to 61 bar were addressed.

In 1997, Venture partners set out with the former State Oil & Gas Authority to develop the vast reserves of Karachaganak. They signed a Final Production Sharing Agreement (FPSA) which will see the partnership operate Karachaganak until 2038. Since signing this agreement they have invested over $22 billion in the operations and have applied industry leading hydrocarbon technology to one of the world’s most complex reservoirs.

In 2016 KPO produced 139.7 million barrels of oil equivalent of stabilised and unstabilised liquid hydrocarbons, gas and fuel gas. In addition, 8.04 billion cubic meters of sour dry gas were re-injected, a volume equivalent to approximately 46% of the total volume of produced gas.

While delivering on its operation commitments, KPO as a responsible corporate citizen works towards generating maximum social and economic benefits from the Karachaganak field for the local communities and the Republic of Kazakhstan as a whole.

Having successfully furnished several of Apache’s other UK North Sea assets (inc. Beryl Bravo & Forties Charlie & Delta) with the innovative, in-house developed v-Trakka Universal Valve Position Indicator, ABLE have now been commissioned to retrofit this innovative device to the Xmas tree valves on the Beryl Alpha Platform.

The v-Trakkas will be replacing pressure transmitters installed on the valve hydraulic lines, the accuracy and reliability of which has been compromised by regular blockages necessitating intensive maintenance. Conversely, once fitted, the v-Trakka requires minimal attention.
The v-Trakka is a compact, lightweight mechanical instrument suitable for installation in the harsh well environment. The 316 st/ st cover and rigid base provides significant protection from dirt and everyday impacts. The cover also provides added safety by preventing personnel from standing in front of the valve stem. The high-viz position marker can be viewed through the toughened-glass window slots.
Apache continue to standardise on the v-Trakka across their various assets with several hundred now installed across the Beryl and Forties fields.

Many operators no longer use limit switches for control of Xmas tree valves as they are considered unreliable and unsuitable; limit switch technology only provides valve status as fully open or fully closed with no continuous feedback.
To compensate for this, an alternative method has been to infer the position of the valve by trending the pressure in the hydraulic lines. However, accuracy of the pressure measurement versus valve position is poor, as is reliability, due to transmitter blockages that require maintenance.

The consequences of incorrect valve position control can include process failures, shutdown and most importantly impact on a safe working environment. Such loss of production can incur massive costs.

For a continuous direct valve position measurement, ABLE have developed a universal valve position transmitter (v-Trakka) which can be retrofitted to most leading types of surface Xmas tree valves to provide an accurate and repeatable 4-20mA output correlating to the actual physical valve position.

Once installed, the v-Trakka requires no maintenance.

In order to facilitate installation across the myriad of Xmas tree valve designs v-Trakka is available in two variants. Model VT1 for continuous direct valve position measurement on valves that have a central stem and Model VT2 for applications involving top side trees that use the indicator window design.

ABLE Instruments presents the ABLE v-Trakka Christmas Tree Valve Position Transmitter. Secured directly to the valve collar and strong enough to withstand a scaffold pole knock, the v-Trakka also has a 316 stainless steel quick fit cover with viewing windows.

It is very easy to fit and simple to set up and provides protection from muck, physical damage and worker injury (by being in front of valve-stem).

Features:

  • 360° sensor allows for any stem rotation
  • 2-Wire EEx d Loop-powered Transmitter
  • Continuous Direct Measurement of Tree Valve-position
  • Universal Design; Retrofit to most common surface-trees, including:
    • Cameron
    • Baker-Hughes
    • Vetco
    • Safoco
    • Wood Group
    • Presco-Dyne
  • Extremely stable and robust design eliminates dependence on problematic limit switches and inferred pressure measurements.

The first steel for the construction of the ship was cut in July 2016. The keel laying ceremony for the ship, yard number 1390, took place on 17 October 2016.

Cammell Laird, the shipbuilding contractor responsible for the vessel’s construction, commissioned ABLE Instruments & Controls Ltd for the supply of a diverse instrument package to equip the Sir David Attenborough with a range of pressure and temperature switches and transmitters for critical pump & compressor protection duties, instrument air and cold room monitoring. ABLE are also supplying a variety of level controls for waste water tanks, drain tanks, expansion tanks and settling tanks, and some high end moisture in oil detectors for measuring water in fuel and lube oils.

The ship will be constructed by combining individually fabricated blocks, much like the Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carriers. The majority of the blocks will be manufactured by Cammell Laird at Birkenhead, but due to a tight schedule, the stern of the ship (named ‘Block 10’) was fabricated at the A&P Group on the River Tyne. The section was transported to Merseyside on a barge in August 2017. The stern section was loaded onto the barge by heavy lifting company ALE, using self-propelled modular trailers (SPMT). The same procedure in reverse was then used to get the hull segment on to the slipway at Birkenhead. The hull of Sir David Attenborough was named by her namesake and launched on 14 July 2018. She was moved into a wet dock for the addition of her superstructure and fitting out. The ship is scheduled to be completed by October 2018.
