The moisture content of the polycarbonate used to construct the panels is critical to the finished quality of the product. Too much moisture in the pellets prior to melting and extrusion and the final product will suffer from runniness and splay (off-colour streaking), too little moisture can cause clogging and production delays and render the end-product brittle.

Considering the significance of an accurate, trace moisture measurement of the polycarbonate pellets prior to production, Kingspan approached ABLE Instruments, experts in the field of moisture analysis, for a precise and reliable solution. ABLE recommended the best-in-class Computrac MAX-4000XL loss-on-drying moisture and solids analyser.

Simple to operate, highly durable and equally at home in research, manufacturing and laboratory environments, the MAX 4000XL is the ideal choice for critical moisture analysis.

Having attained a contract to upgrade existing level measurement instrumentation with high quality Magnetic Level Indicators (MLI) on a North Sea Floating Platform Storage and Offload vessel (FPSO), Craig needed an experienced supplier and manufacturer to address the various fuel and lube oil tank applications. ABLE proposed the supply of the well-respected WEKA AG SmartLine 50 MLI. Based on this small, lightweight float, it is possible to produce a magnetic visual level indicator with a tube diameter of an inch, i.e. 33.7 mm. Thanks to the slim design, steel is saved, which lowers the manufacturing costs but also saves on transportation costs.

Since, as with all WEKA devices, the European Pressure Equipment Directive (PED) is observed, the lower volume plays a major role, as it results in lower categories and a lower test workload, making SmartLine – an intelligent solution for the measurement.

The process equipment included 4-metre-tall, pressurised Buffer Tank vessels installed upstream of the MPP to prevent said pumps from running dry by remixing the gas and liquid in the process.

Unlike most centrifugal pumps, which would be damaged by gas pockets, a MPP can operate on a gas / liquid mix. The Dammam Project however, has the Pumps installed right at the start of the pipeline as the oil comes out of the ground, therefore at this point the oil has not been processed or separated from the gas and water etc, hence the requirement for a MPP.

Each of Buffer Tanks required accurate level control using both a Magnetrol Eclipse 706 Guided Wave Radar (GWR) augmented by visual indication via a Magnetrol Atlas Magnetic Level Indicator (MLI). Both the MLIs and the radar probes are to be manufactured in Hastelloy C with the latter being installed in internally coated carbon steel chambers.

Customer: Haskel Europe Limited
Project: Hydrogen Fuelling Stations
Location: UK & Europe Various
Products: Rheonik HP Coriolis Mass Flow Meters

With 70 years of high-pressure innovation and a strong reputation for quality, safety, reliability and expertise in high-pressure liquid and gas transfer and pressurization technology, Haskel manufacture a full range of hydrogen handling equipment.

For typical hydrogen refuelling stations, medium- and high-pressure storage tanks, with pressure stages of 200 to 450 bar and 800 to 1,000 bar respectively, are used to refuel the customer vehicle. The hydrogen from the low-pressure storage tank can be transferred via a high-pressure compressor to the high-pressure storage tank. The pressure there is high enough to directly refuel the vehicle.

As the hydrogen is transferred to storage and into fuel cell vehicles at very high pressures (900 bar), high velocities and at varying temperatures. The provision of a flow meter to measure under these conditions is not a trivial matter as it must be accurate, reliable and suitable for end user point-of-sale billing. Rheonik mass flow meters have proven to be, and continue to be, the most reliable meters for H2 measurement available. Consequently, Rheonik’s RHM04 was supplied and is currently the only mass flow meter that can meet the necessary criteria.

This is underlined by Rheonik being the first Coriolis manufacturer to obtain a custody transfer approval for a broad range of mass flowmeters for mobile and stationary hydrogen applications up to 1070 bar according to MID MI002 / OIML R137.

Customer: CNOOC
Project: Radar Gauging Upgrade
Location: Golden Eagle Platform, North Sea UK Sector
Products: Magnetrol Eclipse Model 706 Guided Wave Radar

CNOOC International is one of the largest oil producers in the UK North Sea, contributing more than 25% of the UK’s oil production, and 10% of the country’s energy needs.

CNOOC International is the operator of the Buzzard, Golden Eagle and Scott platforms.

Operated alongside their Buzzard and Scott platforms, the CNOOC International Golden Eagle platform, located 70 kilometres northeast of Aberdeen, produced first oil in October 2014 at a rate of 18,000 barrels of oil a day (bopd). This major milestone was accomplished under budget, ahead of schedule, and with a world-class safety record. A further investment of $3.3bn enabled production to peak in 2015 at 70,000bopd.

CNOOC are planning for a long, successful and safe operating life at Golden Eagle, which is also expected to act as a future hub for tieback opportunities. A good example of this hub strategy at work is the Solitaire field, which was discovered in 2001 and acquired by CNOOC International and their Golden Eagle co-venture partners in 2010. Located four kilometres northeast of Golden Eagle, Solitaire was a stranded discovery and not large enough to be developed on its own. By creating a tieback to Golden Eagle infrastructure, Solitaire came on stream with first production in December 2015.

CNOOC recently took the decision to replace their ageing Magnetrol Eclipse Model 705 Guided Wave Radar (GWR) Transmitters with the superior, advanced technology of current generation Model 706 GWR.

Encompassing several significant, performance enhancing features, such as best-in-class Signal-to-Noise Ratio, advanced diagnostics, including pro-active build-up detection, and standard SIL2 Certification, the Model 706 has become the market leader in GWR transmitter performance.

The Model 706 is now deployed across several critical level measurement duties throughout the platform’s separation train.
