Tideway

Tideway is the company delivering the Thames Tideway Tunnel. It is owned by a consortium of investors, and more than two million pensioners have an indirect investment in Tideway through UK pension funds managed by those investors.

London’s Victorian sewers were designed to serve 4 million people. Now nearly 9 million people utilise London’s sewers daily and they regularly overflow into the Thames when it rains, a major source of pollution. The problem is set to be exacerbated by the fact that London’s population is set to rise to 16 million by 2160.

The Thames Tideway Tunnel will protect the river for at least the next 100 years. It will be a 7.2m diameter, 25km-long tunnel, up to 65m below ground. It will run from Acton to the Abbey Mills Pumping Station in Stratford, mostly under the river. Preparatory work on the project began in 2015 and construction is now underway at each of TW’s 24 sites in London. The project is anticipated to be completed in 2025.

The tunnel will cost £4.2bn to complete. The cost of the project is being paid for by Thames Water’s 15 million wastewater customers through their bills, which will rise by approximately £25 per year.

In addition to their major construction role in the project, Tideway are being asked to provide low level hydrogen sulphide (H2S) analysis at 13 key locations across the capital as part of their nuisance odour monitoring remit. Having had previous positive experience of the industry standard Jerome J605 Gold Film H2S Analyser, Tideway approached ABLE for four of the instruments housed in bespoke, weatherproof enclosure systems with custom built mounting frames. The enclosures will also contain telemetry and metrological equipment.

Our Engineers will also be completing commissioning works, regular site maintenance visits throughout the projected 2-year operation period and decommission services as construction works draw to a close.

The enclosure design is intended to minimise time required at site to install and commission. A “Plug & Play” approach with industrial connectors will eliminate the need for a site team to be present to terminate power to the enclosure. ABLE will work with the Tideway team to further refine this specification if needed, to meet the needs of the project.
