Proven V-Cone Flowmeter Reduces Installation And Operating Costs

With its unique, integral, flow conditioning technology, McCrometer’s versatile V-Cone flow meter offers a lowest installed cost, low maintenance, highly reliable solution for a wide spectrum of challenging flow applications.

The V-Cone offers significant installed and operational cost savings on plants with congested equipment layouts where space is at a premium and options for upstream and downstream piping are limited. The meter requires only 0-3 straight pipe diameters upstream and 0-1 downstream. With its rugged design, the V-Cone requires virtually no maintenance with a typical operational life of 25 years.

The contoured shape of the cone constricts the flow without it impacting against an abrupt surface. The consequence being that permanent pressure is minimised and appreciably lower than a typical orifice plate meter.

The V-Cone’s DP flow sensor conditions fluid flow to provide a stable profile that increases accuracy whether operating within liquids, gas or steam. The cone’s central position in the line optimises the velocity of the fluid flow at the point of measurement. The short vortices created generate a low amplitude, high frequency signal with excellent stability. The result is a measurement accuracy to +/- 0.5% with +/- 0.1% repeatability over a wide flow range of 10:1 for line sizes from 0.5 to 120 inches.

One of the most demanding applications to which the V-Cone meter has been successfully deployed is the flow measurement of saturated steam; a non-homogenous fluid with cavitation, shocks and other irregularities. Pitot tubes and orifice plates suffer from low accuracy and low rangeability under these conditions whereas the flow conditioning and mixing effect of the V-Cone eliminates the usual measurement problems.
